2008 Conference

2007 Conference

Seventh Annual Region X Student Transportation Conference
Friday, November 13th, 2009
University of Oregon, Eugene, OR

The Region X Student Transportation Conference is a showcase for student transportation research in the Pacific Northwest (Federal Region X) which includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska. Region X serves as a microcosm of transportation for the entire country, with a diversity of modes, infrastructure systems, and area types that make it a prime testing ground for studies in transportation operations and planning.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Moving People.” Transportation has received a lot of interest recently, especially with the stimulus investment in infrastructure maintenance, a renewed interest in rail travel, and the growing numbers of people choosing to walk and bike. Speakers and panelists will discuss current trends in moving people intermodally as well as in a sustainable fashion.

Past Region X Student Conferences have been held at the University of Washington (2003 & 2008), Portland State University (2004), Oregon State University (2006) and the University of Idaho (2007). The conference is entirely run for and by students. Students are able to present their research and exchange ideas with their peers in an environment that does not exist in the classroom or in other conferences. The conference includes both student presentations and a poster session to showcase the great student-led transportation research being done in the Northwest.

The 2009-2010 conference is sponsored by the Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium (OTREC), the Department of Planning, Public Policy, and Management (PPPM) at the University of Oregon, and LiveMove, a student-led transportation initiative at the University of Oregon.
Please join us in exploring student research in the transportation field!

  • Free Food: The conference will include a catered breakfast and lunch.
  • Free Registration: Registration is free for any student enrolled in transportation programs at universities in the Northwest. Please register by October 30th. For more information, please contact Kevin Belanger at belanger@uoregon.edu.

Student Presentations and Poster Session
Interested students are invited to prepare a poster for general display, a 10- to 15-minute presentation, or both. Space is limited for both, so early registration is recommended. Presentations and posters can be on a range of topics, and collaboration with other students is welcomed. Students will vote on the best presentations and posters with an award ceremony at the end of the conference. Here are some guidelines and tips to assist you in preparing your poster. Contact Kevin Belanger at belanger@uoregon.edu if you have any questions regarding posters and presentations.

Keynote Speaker
The 2009-2010 Region X Student Conference will feature Jim Whitty from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) as the keynote speaker. Jim Whitty is Manager of the ODOT Office of Innovative Partnerships and Alternative Funding. His presentation is titled "Innovations in Transportation During Times of Societal Change," and there will be a period for questions and conversation after his address.

Panel Discussion
Four transportation professionals from the Northwest will participate in this year's panel discussion. The panel discussion will correspond with this year’s theme, Moving People. The participants represent four different ways of human-scale transportation. We will ask them to address both the difficulties and progress in moving people intermodally, and there will be plenty of time for discussion.
